Biography:
Inspired by clubbing of the legendary technoclub "OZ" in Stuttgart, the dj career of Joern Kleinschmager started in 1994. Today, you can meet the audio engineer as a resident DJ in Leizig's club Distillery.Since 1997 he has been involved into Mo's Ferry Productions. As their label DJ he takes part in productions and works on his own releases lately. A result of working and tinkering with Dapayk is the project named "Kleinschmager Audio" with it's output released on Mo's Ferry's sublabel Rrygular. Kleinschmager shares his experiences of event management in the project "dreikommanull" (www.dreikommanull.de), which he founded together with Mentell and Nikolas Sternberg in 2005. Since then, Leizpig has gained a renowned clubbing row, that convinces with quality, a straight line and high claim. The sets of Kleinschmager are known from Thuringia to Berlin, but thanks to his support for the "Dapayk & Padberg Tour" in 2005 (which took place and filled the dancefloors in Germany), he established himself nationwide. Dancing enthusiasts can expect groovy minimal DJ sets, which do not fail their aim at 126 bpm.

Interview:
Electronicmusic.pl: Please tell us about your first steps in electronic music, how you got involved, your first influences, inspirations.
Kleinschmager Audio: I started listening to electronic music in the late 1980s. My first influences were artists such as OMD, Depeche Mode, Anne Clark. But it was a visit in Stuttgart’s technoclub Oz that made me dive into electronic club music and start Djing.
You live in Leipzig, can you discribe the local music scene and tell us a few words about the "dreikommanull" project?
I’ve been living in Leipzig for 5 years now. I must say the club music scene of the city is diverse and you have several well-established styles. Leipzig is known for Deep-House but there’s also a strong Drum’n’Basse scene. The excistence of many more potential styles was one of the reasons to start the project „Dreikommanull“ (www. myspace. com/dreikommanull) four years ago. Together with two friends of mine we throw parties focussing on Minimal and Techno. At Leipzig’s club Distillery (btw one of the oldest techno clubs in Germany), we have regular nights as resident DJs.
In what circumstances you have met Dapayk, how was your cooperation and who played the leading role during the album production?
Me and Niklas (Dapayk), we both grew up in the same area (Thuringia) and we got in touch with each other through the music more than 10 years ago. Since then we went to parties together and spent much time in the studio. Working on Kleinschmager Audio tracks is always an experiment to merge Niklas’s production skills with my experience as a DJ. This album „Audiology“ is a first and wider colletion of our work. Besides the new tracks you’ll find some older pieces, that had been re-recorded and re-mastered.
When I look up the dates of you and Dapayk i can't see you performed together; is there any chance to see you together in the scene?
We try to play on the same parties as much as we can, i.e. on the Mo’s Ferry / RRYGULAR showcases. But we do not plan to perform together as Live PA plus DJ. In my performances as Kleinschmager Audio I’ll combine the traditional way of Djing with some new digital methods, like additional loops and sounds which Niklas has prepared in the studio.
Which words can describe your music best?
I’d say it’s straight, minimal techno that’s widely combinable and shows some influences by House and Dub.
Besides the promotion of your album "Audiology", what are your plans for year 2009?
At the moment we’re working on an international album tour. In the middle of 2009 we’re going to release a Remix EP and following that we already have some ideas for further releases in mind.
What do you think about the musical trends in the next years? Is Minimal going to remain so popular?
To be honest, the trend sound is constantly changing. For now the House-like sound is very hip again and the harder stuff is on it’s way up too. But there’s no big change to the basic structure. A straight and groovy 4/4 beat at 125 BPM is working since the beginning of Techno music and it’s most likely to remain the same.
What kind of music do you listen to when you’re at home and what are your favourite LPs of the last times?
I’m listening to a wide range of music. As a DJ i listen to the newest Techno and Minimal releases for hours, but today the output is often too much to listen to all of them. Sometimes i put on the old LPs from the 80s and 90s. And from time to time i also listen to Jazz and even shows on the radio. I like the current Moodyman-Album Det.riot ..67.
What instruments do you use during the production process and what kind of performance do you prefer: DJ or live?
When we go to the studio the production process is variable. There’re hardware synthesizers and analoge drum machines but also software instruments and sampling. For example we use Machine Drum, Jomox Xbase09, Vermona DRM-1 MKII, Access Virs b, Novation Super Bass Station and Software Logic Audio.
When it comes to performing: Niklas is working on a non-laptop liveact at the moment. I like this pattern and loop based sound without any pre-mixed parts in Ableton. But for myself i’ll stick to Djing in the traditional way plus some extensions made available through digital DJ technologies, i.e. my own loops and track edits, I guess, that’s not too far away from a live pa.
Have you ever been to Poland?
Up to now I’ve been to the cities of Frankfurt/Oder and Goerlitz, which are right on the border. But i’ve never been elsewhere in Poland. I’d really like to come over and play this year. And we’re already working on this for the album release tour. The scene in Poland is supposed to be very active and I’ve heard only the best from your parties there.
