DRUMSOUND interview [wersja angielska]
Ben Drumsound
Main guest of second edition of noisessece (1st of June, CDQ club) will be producer and DJ existing on drum&bass stage for a nearly decade - Ben from popular team DRUMSOUND.

Lets start from Drumsound collective, that consists of 2 members Andy & Ben. How did you meet up? Tell us about the background of the crew, the idea of Drumsound?

We met up at a local night in Derby many moons ago, where we were both residents, it was a cool little a bi-weekly Thursday club night and we warmed up for all the big dj’s at the time.. like Grooverider, Andy C, Peshay, Ed Rush, Ray Keith & Dj Ratty etc. We decided to join forces so Andy could concentrate on the production side more as that was starting to take off with interest from several record labels such as Formation, Urban Takeover, and Tribe records Bristol.

How and when you linked Simon 'Bassline' Smith?

We met Simon Bassline ( another resident of Derby ) at the night were we played as he was a resident there to. He liked what we were producing and we linked up in the studio a couple of times and we really hit it off. We decided to collaborate with Simon on our record label Technique Recordings in sept ‘99 becuase he had experience in running a label (with Absolute 2) and we were making most tunes together. It just made sense really.

The Technique Recordings was established in 1999. Since these time label signed many excelent drum and bass producers. Are you proud of the discography of the label? Are you satisfied with the popularity of your label among drum and bass worldwide community?

We are very happy with how the label has progressed over the last few 8 years or so. We’ve had established artists such as Twisted Individual, Friction, Roni Size, Fresh, Digital, Teebee, Aquasky, Dj SS, J Majik & Wickaman, Distorted Minds, aswell as bringing through some australian artists Skyver, D’Jon, State of Mind and the mighty Phetsta. Technique has always been an underground label so we have a brilliant core following of fans and over the last year or two we’ve had a lot of support from other dj’s outside of the standard drum’n’bass crewe with regular plays on Zane Lowe and Annie Mac’s radio 1 shows.

Year 2006 seemed to be important for Technique Recordings cause of second album of the label called 'Street Technique'. Tell us about this project.

‘Nature of the Beast’ was our first album in 2004 and it was essentially an artist album, which showcased all of our various styles. The ‘Street Technique’ album released in may 2006 was more of a collaborations album, with tunes from ourselves ( Drumsound & Bassline Smith ) and some of the biggest dancefloor producers in the world ( Roni size, Fresh, Friction, J Majik & Wickaman etc).

Which out of those ground-breaking tracks from heavyweight artists, like Fresh, Roni Size, Phesta, J Majik & Wickaman appearing on the album, you appreciate the most?

‘Friends’ by Roni Size was one of our particular favourite tunes off of the album but the alltime favourite was ‘Intergalactic’ by the new man on the block Phetsta.

'Street Technique' contain also some female sound. How it was for you to cooperate with Tali when you were writing 'In The Silence'?

Funnily enough, we didn’t set foot in the same studio at all. It’s a typical example on how you can collaberate on tunes in the 21st Century. Tali heard a different mix of ‘In the silence’ and loved it. She went away & did some vocals for it, sent them over via AIM and we put the tune together like that.

What can we expect from Technique Recordings in 2007?

We have got lots of exciting music to come this year. The first release will be the ‘Street Technique’ rmx’s,‘Scumbag’ remixed by us & the Phetsta rmx of ‘Booty Call’. There will be an EP by Phetsta, with a stomping remix of ‘The Bloodening’ and also featuring ‘Evolution’, ‘The Congo’ & ‘Dutty Funk’. There’s a number of tracks by ourselves forthcoming such as ‘Cold Turkey’, Robotics’, ‘Stories from the Future’, ‘Harder Faster’ which are getting played by all the top DJ’s.
